lakeside shopping mall uk

The Lakeside Shopping Centre is a large out-of-town shopping centre located in West Thurrock, in the borough of Thurrock, Essex just beyond the eastern boundary of Greater London. It opened on 25 October 1990.

The shopping centre, in addition to the retail parks, forms one of the largest shopping areas in a single location within Europe, with almost 2,600,000 square feet (240,000 m2) of retail space on a site of 200 acres (0.81 km2). The community of Chafford Hundred has grown to the east of the centre since its opening. Its main rival is the Bluewater Shopping Centre in Greenhithe, Kent just across the River Thames.Main shopping centre

The shopping centre is one of the largest in Europe with 123,644 m² (1,330,936 ft²) available as retail floorspace although the MetroCentre in Gateshead, after its expansion in 2004, is larger. There are 228 shops, of which there are 3 department stores, 33 cafes and restaurants and a 26-acre (110,000 m2) lake named Alexandra Lake with a PADI certified diving school complex. Lakeside has on average 500,000 visitors per week.

It is currently open on weekdays from 10 am to 10 pm, Saturday from 9 am to 9 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm. The centre's car parks have capacity for 13,000 cars.

[edit] Transport connections

The centre has a direct link to Chafford Hundred railway station and is connected to the M25 motorway which is London's outermost ring road, as well as to the A13 road which connects central and east London to Basildon and Southend-on-Sea. It is connected to the London Bus network by London Buses routes 370 and 372 with other operators such as Arriva, Ensignbus and First Essex also providing bus services to the centre. Route X80 operated by Ensignbus provides a link to Chafford Hundred Station and Bluewater across the Dartford Crossing. First London have recently introduced Route 265 which provides a vital link to Brentwood. In 2007 London Transport announced that Zone 6 rates would be applied to routes 370 and 372 for all stops up to and including Lakeside (the zone had previously ended at Wennington, with an additional fare required to complete journeys to Lakeside). To ensure the centre maintains its competition with the newer (and what is perceived by some as more 'upmarket') Bluewater shopping centre, which lies just over the Thames in Greenhithe, Lakeside has recently undergone major refurbishment at a cost of £30 million. This included new Italian porcelain flooring, new lighting, a new ceiling and new glass roofs which allow much more natural light into the shopping centre. There are now also new, faster lifts, and 4 more escalators along with automatic entrance doors. A non-smoking policy across the whole shopping centre was also introduced in January 2004. The refurbishment has also encouraged refitting of many shops so that they complement the new surroundings. In September 2005, Next opened an 18,600 sq ft (1,730 m2). extension to their store.

The Lakeside Pavilion was an area adjoined to the main shopping centre via a covered bridge - this area had a 'market' feel to it, with various stalls selling novelty gifts, paintings and collector items adjacent to a small food court. By the beginning of 2006 this had been closed and partly removed for the construction of a new entertainment area named ‘The Boardwalk’.

Re-opened on Thursday 14 June 2007, The Boardwalk provides an additional 59,000 sq ft (5,500 m2). of retail space for 10 new restaurants along with more retail and leisure space, as well as a 10 metre boardwalk, offering external seating which overlooks Alexandra Lake. The newly refurbished Old Orleans bar and restaurant was open on the same day, with new features including a rooftop bar.

Vue cinema formed part of the old Lakeside Pavilion, with a 7 screen cinema. This closed on 11 January 2007 to be refurbished, and was re-opened on Friday 15 June 2007; the refurbishment resulted in 9 state of the art screens with stadium seating, including a premium "Gold Class" screen housing luxury reclinable armchair-style seating, and a special screen that would show major sporting, music and gaming events as well as key films. This 'Evolution Screen', with a combination of giant bean bag chairs and sofas, is the first of its kind in the UK. [1]

Apple opened[2] its tenth UK store at Lakeside Shopping Centre. [3]

Marks & Spencer, one of the centre's 4 anchor stores, applied for planning permission in July 2008 to allow construction of a 23,970 sq ft (2,230 m2) third storey extension to their store, in addition to an extensive refurbishment of the store layout and customer facilities. The application was approved at the end of October 2008 although it is unknown when construction will begin.

bluewater shopping mall uk

Bluewater is a super-regional shopping centre, opened on 16 March 1999. It is located at Greenhithe in the borough of Dartford, near the M25 motorway in northwest Kent, England. It is owned by four major UK institutions, Prudential plc and PRUPIM (35%), Lend Lease Europe Ltd (30%), the Lend Lease Retail Partnership (25%) and Hermes (10%) [2].

The centre is on a 240-acre (97 ha) plot in a former chalk quarry. It has a sales floor area of 154,000 m² (1,600,000 ft²) in two levels, making it the second largest shopping centre in the UK after Gateshead's MetroCentre. The floor plan is a triangular shape with 330 stores, including 3 anchors, 40 cafés and restaurants, and a 13-screen cinema. The centre employs 7,000 and serves over 27 million visitors a year. A main rival is the Lakeside Shopping Centre and retail park some 9 miles away in West Thurrock, Essex. The centre is the second largest (in terms of retail area) in the UK, after the MetroCentre in Gateshead, and elsewhere in Europe only Istanbul's Cevahir Mall and Vienna's (Vösendorf) Shopping City Süd are also bigger.

In 1994, Blue Circle approached Australian mall developer Lend Lease to form a partnership. Instead, Lend Lease bought the land and the project from Blue Circle, and gathered a group of major investors, which included: Prudential, Barclays Mercantile, Hermes (acting for Britel), Lloyds Leasing, and Royal Bank Leasing. Lend Lease also formed a pool of minor investors, called the Lend Lease Retail Partnership, with 18 institutions and corporations.

With the Bluewater project finally under way, it was time to sign up the tenants, beginning with the major ones. John Lewis was the first in February 1995, albeit with major concessions, such as the offer of 300,000 ft², one-fifth of the entire floor space, on three levels. Still, this gave Bluewater the credibility it needed to sign more names, including the two other anchor stores. House of Fraser was next and in June 1996 Marks & Spencer signed too. By March 1998, 90% of the retail space was committed.

Construction started on 1 May 1996. At its peak, the construction site employed 2,500 workers simultaneously. In all, 20,000 people worked 11.5 million hours on the construction of Bluewater. At the planned opening date, 16 March 1999, Bluewater was inaugurated with 99% of the shops open for business. It was built by Bovis. The total cost of construction was around GBP £400 million.[3] At the time of its construction, Bluewater was the largest shopping centre in Europe.

In May 2005, Bluewater introduced a code of conduct to ban swearing, clothing that obscures the face (including hoods and baseball caps), and groups of more than five without the intention to shop[4][5]. This policy has divided opinion, with high-profile figures such as Tony Blair showing his support[5], but has been criticised in the liberal press and those working with children locally.

In late 2006 Dartford Borough Council granted planning permission for Bluewater to build a two-story events venue[6] of 5200 sq.m, and further extend the south side of the centre.web design -

whitgift shopping mall uk

The Whitgift Centre is a large shopping centre and office development in the centre of Croydon, London, opened in stages between 1968 and 1970. The centre currently comprises 1,300,000 sq ft (121,000 m2) of retail space and was the largest covered shopping development in Greater London until the opening of Westfield London at White City in October 2008. The Whitgift Centre will be expanded as part of the Croydon Vision 2020 scheme.

The name comes from John Whitgift, a former Archbishop of Canterbury. The centre was built on the site of Whitgift Middle School, renamed Trinity School of John Whitgift in 1954, which moved to a new site at Shirley Park in 1965.

The first shop to open was Boots on 17 October 1968 and the centre itself was officially opened in October 1970 by the Duchess of Kent. In the middle of the Whitgift Centre there was a Roman-themed pub called The Forum. In the 1990s, the centre was almost completely rebuilt to an atrium design, and the Forum pub was demolished.

The shopping centre is on three storeys — the upper two are for retail and the basement provides vehicle access to any of the retail units with a 1 km network of service roads. It adjoins the major Allders store, which has substantial frontage onto the Centre. The office accommodation consists of five tower blocks rising above the shopping centre. The other major shopping centre in Croydon is Centrale across North End, with Park Place due to begin development shortly.

The freehold of the Centre is owned by the Whitgift Foundation, a registered charity in England & Wales.[1]

Shortly after the end of World War II Arnold Hagenbach, a baker with a talent for property investment, and Sam Chippindale, an estate agent from Otley, set up a company called the Arndale Property Trust, the name being a combination of "Arnold" and "Chippindale".

The Trust purchased Bradford's Victoria Swan Arcade in 1954 with the intention of demolishing it and developing a new shopping centre, but it took eight years before leases expired and building work could commence, so in the meantime it developed a site in Jarrow, South Tyneside, which became the first Arndale Centre when it opened in 1961. Its trademark Viking statue was built by the Trust in 1963.

When the Wandsworth Arndale opened in 1971 it was the largest indoor shopping space in Europe.[1]

The largest Arndale Centre built was Manchester Arndale. It was redeveloped in 1996 after being badly damaged in an IRA bombing, and the centre has been owned by Prudential since 1998.[2]Criticism

The Arndale Centres were largely successful, but they also attracted a great deal of criticism as they often involved demolishing old buildings – particularly Victorian buildings – and replacing them with modern concrete constructions in a brutalist style.

"There are people today amassing stupendous fortunes by systematically destroying our historic centres," wrote architectural writer James Lees-Milne, in 1964. "Eventually, all the buildings of the area - good, bad and indifferent - are replaced with chain stores, supermarkets and blocks of flats devoid of all distinction, and all looking alike."[3]

The value of the Wandsworth Arndale was maximised by the high-rise tower blocks built on top of the mall, which helped it to become, according to some commentators, "one of London’s great architectural disasters".[1]

Originally opened in 1972 as The Arndale Shopping Centre in Luton, the Mall purchased the site in January 2006. The Mall Luton is under going changes and new investment. The centre has 128 shop units occupying 755,000 sq ft (70,100 m2), and parking for 2,300 cars.

The area that would become the new shopping centre was cleared during the 1960s many notable buildings which had escaped the damage of World War II were subsequently demolished. Work started on the new shopping centre in the late 1960s and when it opened The Arndale Centre in Luton was the largest covered shopping centre in Europe, it was ousted from this position by the Manchester Arndale centre. In January 2008 it was announced that the Woolworths shop which had been in the Mall since 1973 would be closing. The shop was closed in March 2008 when the lease expired. It is thought that Marks and Spencer, which currently have a smaller store within the mall, are to relocate there.[1] In December 2008 Woolworths went into administration with 200 stores closing in the last week of December and the remainder to close by 5 January 2009 unless a last-minute buyer can be found.

There are currently a significant number of empty units, or short term lets. Some of the national-chains have closed during 2007 and 2008, including Currys Digital, Woolworths, Burtons and Base. Independent retailers have also been closing, some blaming the perceived decline in the centre.[2]

There are a total of 128 retailers.

The 43-acre mall in Shepherd's Bush boasts stores from international brands like Prada, Chanel and Valentino, major US firms including Apple, Nike, and Gap, as well as "anchor" stores from the likes of Marks & Spencer, Waitrose and Next.

Many of the 265 shops at the £1.7 billion development are expected to offer deep discounts on the first day of trading, and Westfield's operators say they have put measures in place to deal with huge crowds. Westfield also contains a 14-screen cinema, 50 restaurants, a gym, a spa and a library under its undulating, energy-efficient roof.

Boris Johnson, the mayor of London, is officially opening the centre, which is expected to attract 25 million shoppers every year despite the financial downturn.

Michael Gutman of the Westfield Group, the Australian company behind the centre, said he was bullish about its prospects despite the imminent recession.

"You wouldn't choose this time, but we've been operating for 50 years and from time to time you open in a boom and from time to time you open in a recession," he said. "We are planning for the long term."
A new overland train station has been constructed to help deal with the huge number of visitors, but locals have warned that shoppers who travel to the centre in their cars could exacerbate congestion problems. The centre has created 4,500 car parking spaces and 570 cycle spaces for those not using public transport.

Around 85 per cent of Westfield's shops are opening today, as some are still not yet complete.

kate spade handbags

All about Kate Spade

In 1993, Kate Spade launched her brand with the vision of creating simple, sophisticated and sensible handbags. With the notion of combining unique fabrics with refreshing styles, Kate Spade engendered a new concept of design in the handbag market: the modern classic.

The inspiration for Kate Spade handbags can not be found in up to the minute trends, but rather in the timeless antiquity of definitive classics. Although the roots of Kate Spade handbags can be traced back to their original nylon to tote, new silhouettes tantalize the senses with fine leathers and textiles (such as luxe haircalf, rich jacquards and stunning exotic embossing).

Today, the brand’s signature style has transcended the realm of handbags to include Kate Spade footwear, Kate Spade eyewear and Kate Spade diaper bags. Nevertheless, the basis for all Kate Spade products remains firmly founded upon her original ideals of functional and fashionable versatility that have made her handbags an iconic symbol since the beginning.
